PLYMOUTH – The Indigenous experience in America has long been overshadowed by the European one, as American history classes focus primarily on English Pilgrims arriving on the shores of Plymouth in 1620, and the attending colonization.

Efforts to balance that narrative with the history of Wampanoags and other natives who lived and thrived in America has led to a more equitable, livelier and inclusive discussion.

History, in the end, has much to do with who is telling it. Plymouth 400 Inc., the organization tasked with hosting events and programs to commemorate Plymouth’s 400th anniversary, has taken steps to ensure that the Wampanoags tell their own story this time around.
