While other 400th anniversary events have had to be rescheduled, the new Plymouth stamp will be released by the U.S. Postal Service as scheduled on Sept. 17. Exactly how it will be handled is yet to be determined, though.
“There will not be a live event as in other first-day-of-issues in the past,” said George McKay, a Plymouth 400 Inc. volunteer who helped coordinate the philatelic effort. “There will be a virtual event with recorded messaging and participation by local officials.”
USPS decided last year it would issue “forever” stamp in 2020 commemorating the settlement of Plymouth 400 years ago. Locally, organizers were pleased with the announcement but disappointed with the first-class stamp’s appearance since it only depicts the ship that brought the Pilgrims to these shores in 1620 and no Native Americans.
