For tourism in Plymouth, the pandemic couldn’t have come at a worse time. The town is celebrating its 400th anniversary, and yearlong celebrations were expected to bring upwards of 3 million visitors to the Plymouth waterfront. Volunteers spent nearly a decade planning events, exhibits and other ways to commemorate the historic milestone.
“It was almost hard to believe. You could believe it if there were a tornado or a hurricane that hit Plymouth, but this is so much bigger than that and there are so many things that people have to focus on right now,” Michele Pecoraro, executive director of Plymouth 400, said. “We planned for every public safety scenario out there, except for this. Nobody mentioned a global pandemic.”
