This program will begin with a presentation focusing on how wildlife and plant life, particularly mammals, birds, and forests, have changed on Cape Cod since 1620. We’ll examine what was here when the Pilgrims arrived, what is gone and what was gone but has since returned. Additionally, many species now call Cape Cod home that were not here in 1620. We’ll also discuss some of the ways in which these species were utilized by the Wampanoag. We’ll then explore the sanctuary property in search of some of the species discussed and visit Try Island, one of the few remnants of the mature, hardwood forest that the Pilgrims would have found when they explored the Outer Cape in 1620.

Presented by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
