Commemoration

PLYMOUTH, MA— The Massachusetts Cultural Council awarded the Town of Plymouth a 2015 Commonwealth Award honoring its exceptional achievement in the arts for supporting and enriching its Creative Community and committing to build a healthier, more vital, and more livable community. By integrating historic preservation, arts, and tourism, the Town of Plymouth has consistently provided a platform for the community’s cultural organizations, and continues to do so by pursuing initiatives like creating the Plymouth Bay Cultural District designation in Downtown Plymouth, which will help leverage the increased tourism that will accompany Plymouth’s 400th anniversary in 2020 and sustain it long after the 2020 commemorations are over.
“On behalf of the Board of Selectmen, we are pleased to announce that the Town of Plymouth has received the prestigious Commonwealth Award honoring our thriving Creative Community,” said Kenneth Tavares, Chair of the Town of Plymouth Board of Selectmen. “Tourism is incredibly important to our Town’s economy and it is vital that we continue to support our cultural organizations and effectively present Plymouth as a cultural destination by highlighting the many arts, music, historical, culinary, and other creative entities here. Plymouth’s creative economy is like no other and, especially leading up to and during the 2020 commemorations, will have perhaps the greatest economic impact on the Town.”
“Once again the MCC is honored to shine a spotlight on the exceptional institutions and individuals who make the Commonwealth’s cultural life the envy of our nation,” said MCC Executive Director Anita Walker. “Their achievements remind us that expanding the quality and availability of arts and cultural experiences to our citizens doesn’t happen by accident. It takes leadership, generosity, and a commitment to excellence.”
The Commonwealth Awards will be presented by State government leaders on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at the Massachusetts State House to sixteen arts, humanities, and science organizations and individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to education, economic vitality, and quality of life in Massachusetts. This event is free and open to the public, and registration can be completed at www.massculturalcouncil.org.
